Patients Undergoing Esophagectomy Fare Best in High-volume Regions

Patients with esophageal cancer who are slated to undergo an esophageal resection should be referred to a high-volume region where at least 12 such operations are performed each year, researchers reported. Data from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville demonstrated that postoperative mortality was lower and the hospital stay was shorter in high-volume regions.

Surveillance After Ovarian Cancer Treatment Is Spotty

Researchers are reporting a wide variation in posttreatment surveillance among gynecologists who care for patients with ovarian cancer. Garo Harmandayan, DO, with St. Louis University School of Medicine, presented the results of a questionnaire completed by 283 members of the Society for Gynecologic Oncologists. The study was undertaken to identify the current surveillance patterns of credentialed experts.
